IMAT 2023 Update: Summary
The IMAT 2023 has undergone some changes from previous years. The most notable change is that the test will no longer be designed by Cambridge Assessment but by a new (and as yet unknown) entity. This may affect the difficulty and format of the test, as well as the preparation materials available for it.
Another change is that the test date has been postponed from September to October 17, 2023. This gives candidates more time to prepare but also means that they will have to wait longer for the results and the ranking lists.
The registration process for IMAT 2023 is expected to open in July 2023 and close in mid to late July 2023. Candidates will have to register online through the university portal and pay a fee of €120. They will also have to choose their preferred test center and university preferences.
The pre-enrollment process for non-EU candidates is expected to start in April 2023 and end in June 2023. This involves contacting the nearest Italian consulate or embassy and obtaining a Declaration of Value (DOV) for their high school diploma. The DOV is a document that confirms that the diploma is valid and compatible with studying in a medical school in Italy.

The IMAT 2023 will consist of 60 multiple-choice questions divided into four sections: Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge (22 questions), Biology (18 questions), Chemistry (12 questions), and Physics and Mathematics (8 questions). The test will last 100 minutes and will be scored according to a formula that awards 1.5 points for each correct answer, deducts 0.4 points for each wrong answer, and gives zero points for each unanswered question.
The IMAT 2023 results will be published on October 31, 2023, on the Universitaly portal. Candidates will be able to view their score, their work, and their personal details. The national ranking list will be published on November 7, 2023, on the same portal. Candidates will be ranked according to their score and their university preferences. The admission process will then proceed according to the rules and deadlines of each university.

Farewell to Cambridge: The New Exam Preparer
The most prominent and groundbreaking change is that Cambridge will no longer be the steward of the IMAT exam. Instead, the responsibility falls upon the capable shoulders of the Italian Minister of University and Research, Mur. With this revelation, we now have clarity on who will shape the format, structure, and delivery of the exam.

Discovering the Exam Locations
One of the burning questions on everyone’s minds was the availability of IMAT exam centers worldwide. The good news is that the exam will be conducted in numerous centers across the globe, not limited to Italy. This alleviates the concerns of non-European applicants and ensures accessibility to a broader audience.
For a detailed list of exam locations, refer to the file provided in the caption below. It includes a summary of today’s discussion and official publications from the Ministry of University and Research, which outline rules, regulations, and exam locations.

Exam Format Unchanged
Fortunately, the core format of the IMAT exam remains consistent. It remains a traditional pen-and-paper written exam with multiple-choice questions. The total number of questions, scoring rules, and timing also remain unaltered. In IMAT 2023 Update, you will tackle 60 questions within a 100-minute timeframe, with a maximum score of 90 points.
This translates to one and a half points for each correct answer, but be cautious—there is a penalty of minus 0.4 points for each incorrect response. Random guessing is not advised; only answer when you are reasonably confident.

Score Cutoff Predictions
While predicting score cutoffs can be useful for strategizing, please exercise caution and do not rely solely on predictions. They can be inaccurate and may lead to unnecessary anxiety. Cutoff scores depend primarily on the difficulty of the exam and the performance of the test-takers.
With an expected increase in the number of applicants for IMAT 2023, competition will be fiercer. However, if the paper’s science section remains challenging, the cutoff scores may not skyrocket. Remember, your performance on the day of the exam will determine your fate more than any prediction.

IMAT 2023 Preparation Tips
To prepare for IMAT 2023, you need to have a good understanding of the test format, syllabus, and scoring system. You also need to practice with IMAT study materials and resources, such as practice tests, textbooks, and online courses. Here are some tips and suggestions for your IMAT preparation:
- Start your preparation at least three to four months before the test date. This will give you enough time to cover all the topics and skills required for the IMAT, as well as to review and revise your knowledge.
- Familiarize yourself with the test format and syllabus. The IMAT consists of 60 multiple-choice questions divided into four sections: Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge (22 questions), Biology (18 questions), Chemistry (12 questions), and Physics and Mathematics (8 questions). The test lasts 100 minutes and is scored according to a formula that awards 1.5 points for each correct answer, deducts 0.4 points for each wrong answer, and gives zero points for each unanswered question. You can find more details about the test format and syllabus on the MIUR website.
- Use reliable and relevant study materials and resources. You can use textbooks, online courses, practice tests, and other sources to improve your knowledge and skills for the IMAT. Some of the recommended books and websites are:
- Thinking Skills Coursebook by Cambridge, which provides a comprehensive guide to the Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge section of the IMAT.
- 700 BMAT Practice Questions by ISC Medical, which offers a large number of practice questions for all sections of the IMAT, as well as explanations and tips.
- The Ultimate BMAT Guide by UniAdmissions, covers all aspects of the IMAT, including theory, practice, strategies, and techniques.

- Practice with IMAT past papers and mock tests. This will help you familiarize yourself with the types of questions, difficulty level, and time pressure of the IMAT. You can also use these tests to assess your strengths and weaknesses, identify your gaps in knowledge, and monitor your progress. You can find IMAT’s past papers on the MIUR website or on EnterMedSchool. You can also take mock tests on [IMAT Buddy] or MEDschool.it.
- Manage your time effectively during the test. You have 100 minutes to answer 60 questions, which means you have less than two minutes per question on average. You should allocate your time according to the number and difficulty of questions in each section. You should also skip any questions that you are unsure about or that take too long to solve and come back to them later if you have time. You should also review your answers carefully before submitting them.
- Stay calm, focused, and confident throughout the test. The IMAT is a challenging and competitive exam that requires a lot of preparation and mental stamina. However, you should not let stress or anxiety affect your performance or motivation. You should trust your abilities and knowledge, avoid distractions and negative thoughts, and maintain a positive attitude.
